Tetra Pak Printing with Helen Brown

Tetra Pak printmaking is a fun, fast and experimental form of intaglio printmaking that transforms everyday milk and juice cartons into unique printing plates.

Used cartons are cleaned and cut into shape before being worked into with an etching needle to create fine lines and textures. Areas of the surface can be peeled away to reveal the card beneath, which holds more ink and prints as rich, dark tones. Tape can be applied to create soft tonal effects, while cut-out sections can be left white or given colour to produce striking layered images.

Because Tetra Pak can be cut into intricate shapes, plates can be combined and layered to create bold, dramatic compositions. The distinctive lines, textures and marks produced by the material bring an expressive, spontaneous quality to your prints.

As Tetra Pak plates naturally wear down over time, they produce only a limited edition of prints, making each series unique.

Monoprinting can also be incorporated, either as a background layer or printed over the top to add further depth, texture and colour.

We use the etching press to print with, meaning you will get fantastic results each time and be able to take more than one print each time you ink.

What you’ll learn

During the course you will learn how to:

If you enjoy this technique and would like to explore monoprinting in greater depth, you can continue your printmaking journey by joining one of the follow-on Monoprint courses.

Courses are short to allow participants to test the medium with the potential to take multiple courses, one after the other, to further develop their imagery using multiple, printing techniques.

For experienced or returning artists – participants will be able to further develop their imagery and techniques with individual guidance from the tutor.

All courses are suitable for beginners and experienced artists, unless specifically listed as ‘Returning Students only’. These classes are for those familiar with the studio, have done at least two sessions of the course and know how to use our presses.
