Weekend Courses

Ann d’Arcy Hughes – Etching – ‘Delivering Freedom to the Beautiful of mind’

Traditional Etching with Ann d’Arcy Hughes

Saturday 15th June – 10.30am – 4.30pm – £95

Saturday courses will run in 2023, please contact us to be kept informed of the new dates.

In the 16th Century, Printmakers began to develop this Intaglio technique to create intricate, linear, tonal, textured and semi-embossed prints. Using Zinc and Steel, we continue in this tradition, teaching techniques that connect us to the history of the medium, providing an opportunity to explore:

  • Hard and Soft ground – for line, texture and mark making.
  • Fine and Coarse Aquatint – to create tone, texture and colour.
  • Marbling and Sugar Lift – Mark making techniques.
  • Multiple plates – for layered, colourful images.

More than one course will be needed to explore all of the techniques above.

Hebe Vernon-Morris – Lithograph – ‘The beginnings of a plan’

Zinc Plate Lithography with Hebe Vernon-Morris

Saturday 6th July – 10.00am – 4.30pm – £95 – FULL

Using grained, Zinc plates, embrace this delicate process to create hand drawn, layered prints full of movement, texture and colour.

The course starts with a short talk to explain the potential of the medium using a series of inspiring Lithographs showing the versatility of the medium from abstract imagery to fine line drawings. Participants will experiment with a variety of specialist, grease-based drawing materials to create images using marks, washes and line before drawing their image on the plate and printing.

More than one course will be needed to  fully explore the potential of the medium.

Helen Brown – Woodcut – ‘High & Over’

Wood, Lino and Vinyl cut with Helen Brown

  • Chine Colle – the use of coloured papers
  • Jigsaw – the cutting up of the block into interlocking pieces to allow multiple colours to be applied to the block before printing.
  • Reduction – Create multi-coloured, layered prints from one block by incrementally and systematically removing different parts of the block  between printing.
  • Multiple blocks – use more than one block to make a layered image
  • Textured printing – use found materials to add visual texture

More than one course will be needed to explore all of the techniques above.

Monoprint – ‘Leaves and Leaves”

Monoprint & Drypoint combined

Explore the vibrant world of Monoprint and the intricate art of Drypoint combined.

You will begin with the spontaneity and vivid colours of monoprinting, using textures, leaves, and direct painting techniques.

At the end of the first session you will be shown how to create a Drypoint plate, and how this can be combined with a monoprint to create a multi-plate print.

You will finish making your Drypoint plates and learn how to print them as a single image and a multi plate mono and drypoint print, using the knowledge gained in the first week.

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced printmaker, this course welcomes all levels. Join us for an enriching experience as we blend creativity and technique in a two-week artistic adventure!

All courses have a £1.50 materials fee per session plus charges for any paper and blocks you use, payable to the end of the course.
